The vertical bar provides alternation in the whole group: ([0-9]*\.?[0-9]+|[0-9]+\.?[0-9]*) It would be easier to read like this; ( [0-9]*\.?[0-9]+ | [0-9]+\.?[0-9]* ) Get the idea?
